The other day, my dad hurt himself in the car. He said, "That hurts like the Dickens!" And then we had a debate: WHO ARE THE DICKENS? AND WHY MUST THEY HURT SO MUCH? Comment to tell me why. Please. Think of the children...

Dickens is another name for Devil...so when you say "What the Dickens?!" you are really saying, "What the Devil!" It was phrased sometime in the 16th century and was first used in Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor". There you go. =)
